The Farmers Bank is a National Historic Site and a symbol of Acadian survival. The Bank operated from 1861 to 1894 and was the precursor to Caisses populaires and the Credit Union Movement in North America. This building is a legacy of an extraordinary person, Rev. Georges-Antoine Belcourt, parish priest of Rustico from 1859 to 1869. Through his efforts he was able to establish the Farmers Bank, a school, a library, and an orchestra. He imported the first steam car to British North America in 1866.
